Outreach

As part of ERS's ongoing commitment to community outreach, Dr Hazel Lin was invited to Leng Kwang Baptist Church on Saturday, May 30th to share on common ophthalmic conditions that we encounter in today’s modern world. The session covered conditions such cataract, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, refractive errors and digital eye syndrome amongst others.

This was an interactive session where participants were encouraged to ask questions throughout the session. Myths were debunked and the scope covered common symptoms, prevention strategies, treatment options and recommended screening frequencies. The talk was well received, with many participants asking thoughtful questions and sharing their own experiences.

For a more hands-on approach, Amsler grid charts and pinholes were distributed for attendees to test their vision. Amsler chart is a simple tool that can use at home to monitor for early warning signs of AMD between check-ups.

This visit reflects ERS's belief that eye care extends beyond the clinic. By engaging directly with the community, we hope to encourage greater awareness and earlier intervention for sight-threatening conditions.

Dr Chee actively participated in a vision screening event held in conjunction with the official opening of the Wellness Club @ Hougang Blk 912, graced by Guest of Honour Ms Jasmin Lau, Member of Parliament and Minister of State for the Ministry of Digital Development and Information, and the Ministry of Education. Dr Chee screened close to 40 residents of Hougang, identifying several conditions requiring further attention, with the appropriate referrals given to the individual who came for screening. The screening concluded on a high note, leaving residents reassured and well cared for.

Dr Daniel Su joined the second Medical Mission team sent by his church to Coron Island, Palawan, The Philippines. The team visited the villages of Marcilla, Dipulao and Borac from 2-7 March 2026 and provided medical, dental and optical services to 1200 villagers over 3 days. At the optical station, Dr Daniel Su and his team screened 323 villagers and prescribed more than 250 pairs of reading glasses. They also performed refraction for 50 needy villagers who had prescription glasses made in Singapore and delivered to them in Coron.

In December 2024, Dr Daniel Su was part of the Medical Mission team from Calvary BP Church to visit Coron Island, Palawan, The Philippines. The team went to Bayang village and Turda village to provide medical, dental and optical services to more than 700 villagers over 2 days. Dr Daniel Su ran the optical station, performing vision screening and prescribing reading glasses to more than 100 villagers.

The doctors and staff at Eye & Retina surgeons recently collaborated with the Rotary Club of Jurong Town and the Home Nursing foundation in a pilot holistic healthy ageing event which included: eye screening, medical and mental health screening on the 14th of January 2024. The event spotlighted the healthcare needs of the seniors, with the focus on free eye screening, mental wellness, Traditional Chinese Medicine and on the spot glucose and cholesterol screening.

After months of planning, the Eye screening was made possible with the transport and loan of equipment from the Singapore Women’s Association, while the vision, eye pressure checks and medical eye examinations were provided by the doctors and staff from the Eye & Retina Surgeons.

In addition to the free eye screening, there was a free mental wellness talk and workshop by the team from the Home Nursing foundation CREST team and Traditional Chinese Medicine consultation and treatment for the seniors provided by JNP healthcare. The pilot healthcare outreach to the seniors who frequent the HNF Wellness centre was a resounding success and it could not have been possible without the help of all the partners involved from the Home Nursing Foundation, Rotary club of Jurong Town, JNP Healthcare and our youth volunteers from ACJC and other schools.
